When a patient comes to consult for weight loss, before undertaking an extensive step it is important to verify that there is indeed the need for clinical weight loss and to measure the exact requirements. Almost 50% of the patients who claim to have experienced significant weight loss do not actually present any change in body weight that can be measured objectively. It is not uncommon to treat patients who have not noticed that they have really lost weight in a relevant degree. Any significant weight gain that a previously healthy person has not deliberately sought indicates the existence of a systemic disease.
